Botanical classification:

Flax is an erect herbaceous plant, reaching a height of about a meter, with a slender stem, lanceolate leaves, and blue flowers. It was known and cultivated in ancient Egypt since the time of the Pharaohs.

A fabric known as linen cloth was made from it, which was used in mummification.

Cultivated flax plants grow to a height of 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) with slender stems. The leaves are bright green, thin, 20–40 mm long, and 3 mm broad.

The flowers are pale blue, 15–25 mm across, and five-petalled. The fruit is a dry, round capsule 5–9 mm across, containing several glossy, apple-shaped, tube-shaped brown seeds, 4–7 mm long.
